The United Way of Fairfield County announced that over $1.74 million was raised during the 2007 campaign, up over the $1.73 million raised last year. “ In a time when we shouldn’t have raised more money, we did “, Executive Director Sherry Orlando, told the crowd on Tuesday.
United Way campaign organizers held their Award’s Banquet early 2008. It was a time to celebrate successes but also a time to thank all the individuals who supported this year’s efforts.

The United Way campaign is a community event. It is also a community opportunity to come together to assist families and individuals in need.
Martin Taylor, 2007 Campaign Chairman, handed over the infamous suspenders to Terry McGhee, CEO, Westerman Companies, and 2008 Campaign Chairman. Terry is looking forward to his role as Chairman and will begin planning for the 2008 campaign in February. Terry has announced that Mayor Dave Smith has agreed to serve as 1st Vice Chair or 2009 Campaign Chairman.

Terry McGhee, 2008 Campaign Chairman
Terry A. McGhee is currently serving as President and CEO of Westerman, Inc., which is located in Bremen, Ohio. He has held this position since 1993. He started with Westerman, Inc., in 1972. His first job with Westerman, Inc., was as a salesman. He went on to serve as Manager of Engineering and Quality Assurance, Vice President of Manufacturing, Executive Vice President, and Corporate Treasurer.
Terry graduated with a Bachelor of Business Degree from Ohio University in 1972. He has also participated in several additional classes which could apply towards his Masters of Business Degree at Ohio University.
Terry is the current Chairman of the 2008 United Way of Fairfield County Campaign Cabinet. He previously held the office of Treasurer for this Board. He is a past attendee of the Fairfield Leadership Tomorrow class, graduating in May of 1997. Terry is a member of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce and past Chairperson of the Lancaster-Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce. Terry is also a member of the Independent Oil and Gas Associations of several states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, and Michigan. He is an active member of the Chief Executive Network.
Over the past few years, Terry has been active with the Grace United Church of Christ Council in Lancaster, Ohio. He has served in many capacities. In years past, he was President of the Church Council, as well as Past Chairman of the Church Audit Sub-Committee and current Chairman of the Capital Campaign.
Terry has also served on several Bank Boards of Director as well as many sub-committees of those Boards.
Terry and his wife, Chris, live in Lancaster. They are the parents of two daughters, Melissa and Lindsay, and the grandparents of one granddaughter, Alexis, and one grandson, Derek. In his leisure time, Terry enjoys golf, gardening, and traveling.
Mayor David Smith, 1st Vice Chair / 2009 Chairman
Mayor Smith was born and raised in Lancaster, son to Mary P. Smith and Irvine G. Smith and brother to Frank R. Smith. He is a 1966 graduate of Lancaster High School and a 1970 graduate of the University of Colorado with a BS degree in Business with an emphasis in Marketing.
Having worked at the family owned Frank E. Smith Funeral Home throughout high school and college summers, he also worked at the Lancaster-Eagle Gazette for several years beforestarting a 19-year career with Anchor Hocking from 1975 to 1994. All of his positions with Anchor were in either sales or marketing, including seven years in St. Paul, MN with Anchor's Plastics, Inc. subsidiary from 1985 to 1992. He also worked for Lancaster Glass from 1994 to 1998 before returning to the Smith Funeral Home in 1998.
David's civic interests include being a member of the Lancaster City School Board from 1995 to 2001, serving as president for two years and vice-president for three years. He has been involved in the Lancaster-Fairfield County 4th of July Committee since 1993, serving several positions including President. He also served the 4th Ward on Lancaster City Council from 2002 to 2003. He was elected Mayor of Lancaster in November of 2003.
David and his wife Debbi are members of the First United Methodist Church in Lancaster. They have two grown children: Matthew, an Emergency Doctor at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD – Matt and his wife Kay have a daughter; and Katie, who is married to Michael Schenk and they have two sons. Katie works in Westerville with Group Benefits Agency as a licensed agent and administrator.
Every year the United Way helps to fund 20 organizations in Fairfield County. The campaign embodies the effort required to garner these funds, and only through your support are we able to acheive this goal.
